TONGUE TIE is the restricted mobility of the tongue resulting from tight frenulum. Also called ankyloglossia.
Some studies have shown that about four per cent of babies have TONGUE TIE.
If you and your baby are finding breastfeeding difficult, you can ask your doctor, lactation consultant midwife or nurse to check for TONGUE TIE. A proper full newborn exam will include a sublingual examination to check for TONGUE TIE.
Understanding of TONGUE TIE and of Frenotomy is valuable to all professionals involved with feeding, speech, dental and oral issues.
